Philosophy
Students in grades 5/6 were placed in academically appropriate math groups. Math was one priority, due to math NECAP scores. We also tried to make sure that we considered their literacy needs as well.
We based our math placement decisions on the following items: teacher recommendation, classroom practices, AIMSWEB testing, NECAP testing, district math computation tests, and placement tests. It is the 5/6 team's desire to have these groups be flexible, meaning that the students' placement can change as they grow academically. Research shows that this can be a huge advantage in motivating students to work to the best of their ability. We are not and have no plans to highlight or share the academic levels of the students. We are not trying to foster a competitive atmosphere or an unhealthy one. Rather, we would like students to compete with themselves. It is about increasing their own learning and best meeting their academic needs. |
