422010_82853_0.pngFriday Report
4/12/10 - 4/16/10

  • April Break is next week.
  • Please check the back of this for new science info.
  • Mother’s Day Bake and Plant Sale fundraiser is on Saturday, May 8 at T-Bird in BF from 9:30-3:30. More info to follow!

In Math, 60% of sixth grade students are working in the sixth grade program’s Glencoe text. The rest of the group is working on developing necessary computation skills necessary to progress in math.
In science, students completed an assessment on igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, as well as, the rock cycle. We started a unit on the hydrosphere. Students did a review of the water cycle to prepare them for this short unit. We will soon begin a unit on Earth’s biosphere, which includes ecosystems. Please check the information on the back of this report for things students can begin collecting for a project that is coming up!
In language arts, we practiced writing a paragraph when given only an assigned topic.  Students use a paragraph diagram to plan their paragraph.  They had to decide the topic sentence, details, point of view, sequence, order and tense.  After the break, we will review detail sentences and begin clincher sentences.
Social studies classes are busy carving their chop stamps and should be finished by Friday. Our next unit of study will take us back into the classic cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.

Ways that I can help my child:

Please check out the parent portal on Power School to learn more about your child’s progress in classes!

Check the agenda each night for your child’s homework assignments, teacher’s initials or sticker, and communication.

Check your child’s work. If it involves writing a paragraph check that it is indented and focused on one topic.  Please continue to check sentence writing.  A complete sentence should have a capital at the beginning, end punctuation, make sense and include a subject and a verb.

SCIENCE: Students will soon receive an assignment that will have them constructing an ecosystem. While the specific of the project have not been assigned yet, April break is a great time for students to start collecting things they will need.
  • (1) 2 liter soda bottle with cap, rinsed clean
  • (1) cupful of garden soil
  • (1) cupful of gravel
  • Small amounts of leaf matter, small rocks, and small twigs
  • Sprigs of elodea and  duckweed plants (if able)
Most of these items are things that can be found around your home. I realize that item D may be more difficult to find. If you have some to donate that would be helpful. In addition, we need the following items to be donated at a later date.  Please do not send in until requested as some of these things are alive and we may not be ready to keep them that way! Please keep the following in mind:
  • Grass, alfalfa, and mustard seed packets (can be sent in early)
  • Sprigs of elodea and duckweed plants
  • Algae
  • Pond snails
  • Mosquito fish
  • Crickets
