Students in the 5th and 6th grades have started a unit on recreational games.  Students will be introduced to ping pong, badminton, shuffleboard, 4 square, and bowling.  They will have the opportunity to practice skills, learn the rules, and learn how to keep score for each of these life-time activities.

As we are now in the midst of winter, please help your child to be prepared for class by checking to see if they have their sneakers and agenda.  5th and 6th graders have physical education every TUESDAY AND THURSDAY.

In physical education, we are working on activities which will allow your child to do the following things:
1.  Move using concepts of body awareness, spatial awareness, effort, and relationships
2.  Demonstrate competency in a variety of manipulative, locomotor, and non-locomotor skills
3.  Demonstrate competency in combinations of manipulative, locomotor, and non-locomotor skills  performed individually and with others
4.  Demonstrate competency in games, rhythms and dance, and health and skill related concepts
5.  Know the rules and appropriate behaviors for selected physical activities
6.  Understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, self-expression, and communication
7.  Appreciate the value that physical activity has toward a healthy lifestyle

Physical fitness assessments take place two times a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.  Each student will be assessed in the areas of muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardio-respiratory endurance.

Reminder-in order for your child to participate fully in the physical education program, he/she will need to be prepared for activity.  This includes:
1.  Sneakers-athletic footwear.  Sneakers must be tied or velcroed as intended by the manufacturer.  Street shoes, sandals, etc. are not appropriate as they do not afford the foot and ankle the proper support for the types of activities that we do.
2.  Clothing that allows your child to move freely, but fit appropriately.  We follow our school dress code.  A T-shirt and comfortable pants are the most appropriate type clothing for the activities that your child will be participating in.  Shirts with spaghetti straps are not allowed in school or in physical education.
3.  No jewelry of any kind -watches, rings, hoop/dangling earrings, bracelets, necklaces are unsafe in physical education and cannot be worn.

Homework may be assigned occassionally and we do have written work in class.  All assignments are expected to be handed in on the date it is due unless there are special circumstances.  Assessments may be written, oral, or performance tasks.
Students are graded on effort, behavior, demonstration of understanding, and preparedness (sneakers, agenda, and ID).

I am available to answer questions or concerns at any time by contacting me at school.  I look forward to meeting you and working with you and your child, and appreciate your cooperation in helping your child in developing skills that will lead toward a lifetime of healthy living!
